Women's State Team 1991-1993

10 - 12 weekly training sessions

Sessions 1991 ball Sessions 1992 ball Sessions 1993

I was at the time, the State Team Coach of the Amateur Men's State Team (1987-1993), when I was invited to take on the girls State Team in 1990 for on a three year contract.

Although I was working full time (teacher), I was happy to take on the role as each had different interstate championships. the Men's interstate competitions were usually held in March or April and the women 's interstate in September.

Starting in 1990 I took on coaching the Women's State Soccer team, at the first training session I was disappointed with the turn up and found out that the Women's Soccer Association had split into two groups so I would only be working with 50% of girls available in WA, because the break-away group they did not release any girls for the current West Australian Women's State Team that I would be coaching.

Start May 1991

Invitations were sent to all girls who wished to try out for selection on Saturday mornings at 11:00 am at various club grounds and then to attend training sessions at The University Grounds on Monday nights at 5:30pm for 6 pm start. The lights were automatically turned off at 7:30 and I usually ran 90 minute sessions, so that was a problem with session planning given the short duration, we played a game to finish then did our warm down in the dark.

June 1991

We ran a 3 day live in camp for all girls including the provisional State Team Squad, at the Challenge Stadium and invited some guest coaches which worked very well; see program below

I also went to Bunbury and all parts of Perth putting on Saturday Soccer Clinics trying to encourage more girls to try for the State Team. We selected two girls from Bunbury to attend state team training in Perth.

I introduced the girls to more passing and control sessions because I felt our strength would be in speed accurate passing and pressure, but the control was an issue with some girls, and we needed to work on getting the ball under control and then curate passing, some aspects of this hindered some of the drills but the effort was magnificent and they rapidly made progress. Although some thought the drills to difficult at that time.

In 1992 We later moved to Gibney Reserve where we had our own club rooms and excellent lights.

1991 Training Coaching Sessions

Passing,

I felt the best methodology was to use sharp passing and ball control, I played two friendlies against boy youth teams where we were soundly beaten, but the girls learn t a lot about passing and moving off the ball, we finally played against several men's veterans team and only by smaller margins, against Forrestfield we lost 4:1 which was a much improved performance.

Here are the sessions weeks for 1991

I started the team concentrating on passing, building up to sharper and sharper passing drills in most sessions, we used two touch passing and passing golf to improve passing techniques.

Along with the normal coaching sessions I usually ended up with all touch soccer 190 G013 All Touch Soccer Game or pinball soccer

1991 In Canberra, We played six games in cold and wet conditions, our first training session was in a snow storm, which the girls loved, so we let them off to go skiing in the afternoon, we lost three games by the odd goal, won one and drew one scoring 6 goals against 7 so we performed well but were a little in awe of our opposition and we were considered a much weaker opposition because of the split in the girls competition in Perth but we surprise several teams with our skill and determination. We did win best supporting team trophy which was an indication of the character and great spirit in the team.

Women's State Team 1992

1992

In November, I was asked to coach the Men's Amateur State Team for an interstate tournament brought forward to January 1992 in Victoria, so I started the men's squad training at Belmont Sports Club.

I invited any State Team Girls to join us in the men's training, of which most turned up for training during November and December. This worked better than planned with the mix of girls and guys in all sessions, the team of ladies seemed to improve playing alongside the men who were all working hard to get selected for the final team.

I thought that the girls improved rapidly in speed and sharpness, they were playing under my pressure sessions which you can download from the men’s team session here. So the girls were having to work at a much higher level.

The WA Amateur State mens Team finished runners up in the Interstate Championships, losing the final 2:1 to Northern Territory.

1992

The girls were not playing till September so we did not start State Training till May 1992

1992 - Later I would play the ladies state team against veterans men’s teams to help sharpen their passing and their sessions started again but at a higher level than I had previously considered

So again I played the team in stiffer opposition against Forrestfield men's veterans where we lost 4: 0 but we were passing the ball better, and I increased the pressure in training. We played a country select and the WA Schoolgirls but finding hard opposition was a problem. So I increased the pressure levels to level 2 or 3. You can see all the sessions for 1992 here

1992 In Queensland Interstate Championships

In Queensland, We played on a very poor pitch and played six games losing four by only one goal margins including a ridiculous penalty decision, our inability to take goal opportunities cost us in this tournament, but overall we had improved. We were a much better outfit and surprised some of the opposition with our speed and passing. I considered this a very unlucky tournament.

Women's State Team 1993

1993

WA State Womens Team in Championship Shirts

1993 I feel we needed to be a fast passing team and give opposition very little time on the ball by pressuring their play but, to do this I played the team against more veteran’s Men's teams again losing to Forrestfield Vets (lost 5:2) and against three other men's veterans teams, but we improved every game, the confidence of the players increased and by 1993 we became a very strong positive team with good passing skills, In Perth we were very strong, we won four games and lost 2 by one goal margins, the best finish for the state girls in the past few years.

See Women's week by week sessions for 1993 here

Any State Team finds it very difficult to find tough games to play, playing against local clubs, so that is why I played them against older men where there was a noticeable improvement in the skills and speed of play and having to play very well against stronger opposition. The girls did really well against very tough opponents in our warm up games and this showed against state team opposition. The Veteran men were very helpful giving advice and support and I sincerely thank them for that.

The Women's State team were invited to join the WA Professional Men's State Team in a tour to Kalgoorlie, which was thrilling for the girls traveling as two representative teams to Kalgoorlie.

I conducted coaching clinics in the mornings with the State girls and local players then in the late afternoon, we played a combined country team prior to the State Men's Professional Team game, we won our game 7:0 and the men also won their game but it was a nice event for the girls to be invited to and they all had a great weekend.

Then in Perth we played the Presidents Team which we won comfortably 6:0

Summary

Given the fact I had only 50% of WA girls to try for the State Team because of a break away association, I believe we improved every year and the standard improved over the three years. Having our own headquarters and clubrooms at Gibney Reserve help tremendously, the club and lights were excellent and visiting representative teams congratulated us on great pitches and facilities.

We ran a weekend camp at Penhros College (our 3rd camp) that also worked well. I also conducted coaching sessions in Kalgoorlie and Bunbury and in and around Perth to try and encourage females to play soccer. I developed a Development Plan but I hope the two groups can combine because girls have a strong desire to be represented in soccer throughout the world.

Record

1st year we played in ACT and came 5th out of seven state teams

2nd Year we played in Queensland and were very unlucky to lose 3 games by 1:0 to finish 5th again out of seven state teams

3rd Year we missed out on a final, winning four games, losing two. we lost to NSW by one goal and then, losing to a last minute goal 1:2 v's South Australia to finish 3rd out of seven teams.

We played 37 games, won 19, drew 1, lost 17, Scored 107 goals and conceded 82 goals

During my time with WAWSA I provided a Development plan, conducted clinics in the country Bunbury and Kalgoorlie and held three live in camps and seven one day camps of soccer coaching. In 1993 we were invited to join the WA Senior (Professional) State team on a coaching tour to Kalgoorlie and I ran a coaching clinic and the WAWSA State team played against a combined representative team, wining 7:0

Overall the team developed very well with a very high performance level, we established our own coaching venue at Gibney Reserve with clubrooms and floodlights and it was a very interesting and enlightening 3 year campaign, in 1993 I was voted Coach of the Year.
