History

Granby was formed in the 1960's from members of The Granby Youth Club, they had a sucessful 5-A-Side team and ventured onto the big pitch around 1966. They played in the Leicester Sunday League Division 14 about 1966-67 and were promoted that year moving up several divisions to Division six where again they won the league in 1967-68 and were again moved up to Division Two in 1968-69, the team won League and cup games on a regular basis till about 1969-70.

They played at Saffron Lane park, (now Aylestone Park) and were sponsored by The Cricketers Arms pub. Here the guys and gals met after the youth club nights in the Snook at the back of the pub, and on Friday nights when they went out for a social night of boozing.

Several of the players and supporters remained life long friends even though some moved to other places and overseas. Rob moved to Spain with wife Jean, Peter Faulks moved to Australia and coached the WA State Soccer team and the Women's State Soccer Team, his Free soccer coaching handbook can be found here. John Walsh a prolific tall striker had trials with better teams and later worked at EMI in London promoting some famous pop and rock groups. Keith Sturgess (Wakefield) became councillor for Leeds City Council for many years and he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2016 New Year Honours list.

Terry Lander went on to run a very successful business and served on the Leicester City Soccer Club board, his brother Tony Lander becoming a Director of the club around 2006-7.

The players took several holidays together in particular to Tossa De Mar in Spain (9) 1967 and to Majorca (10) 1968 and then again to Spain with eight to ten members holidaying together in 1969.

Keith Riley, Peter Faulks and an other, won the Leicestershire Youth Table Tennis competition in 1964 and played several demonstration games at local youth clubs.

Rob moved to Spain with his wife Jean the wedding photo is shown below (Peter Faulks was the photographer) more names needed.
